Foothills Academy Science Fair

This Year's Competition:
Don't know what a science fair looks like? You can see some images from our first year's (2007) competition here.
General Information
Foothills Academy recognizes the importance of science and technology as an integral part of K-12 education. We support this with our state-of-the-art Science Lab, a full range of science core and elective subjects, and an annual Science Fair. Our Science Fair is the first level of a multi-tiered competition leading to an international event, and is open to Foothills students at all grade levels. Judges will be drawn from our own science faculty as well as outside sources.
The top three winners at this level will receive gold, silver, and bronze medallions for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. To see an image of these fine medals, appropriately hanging from a ringstand, click here. All entrants will receive a certificate of participation, recognition at the award ceremony, and extra credit in their current science course. For high school students, participation is also noted on your transcript. To download an application form, click on either of the links below:
Note that you are required to read the Protocol and Safety Rules to participate. You can download a copy of that document below:
Most of your questions will be answered on our FAQ page. If you have any additional questions about this event, please contact either of the Faculty Moderators listed below:

Dan Heim: dan@heimhenge.com
Mentors Available
The Carefree Kiwanis Club, sponsors of the second tier competition, can provide adult mentors to assist you with your project. They have several members with science and engineering experience who are willing to share their expertise with students. For more information about their mentor program, contact member:
Jim Walborn: jim_walborn@qwest.net
The Kiwanis have also prepared an informative Handbook, useful to students, parents, and teachers. You can download it in PDF format below:

Participation Guidelines
The Foothills Academy Science Fair (FASF) is open to all grades, and serves as a first-level competition leading to the Kiwanis Community Science Fair (KCSF), and then to the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF). Winners there can advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Any project from physical or life science areas will be considered for admission. Awards include medals, subscriptions, books, cash prizes, and scholarships. In addition, you will earn academic credit in your current science course for participating.
If you want to participate in this event, please note the following guidelines:
1. Entries may be individual, or in teams of two or three
students from the same grade.
2. All projects must test an original hypothesis using the
scientific method.
3. Entries must be made via our official application form
(available above).
4. Applications not meeting our criteria will be returned with
helpful advice for resubmission.
5. Returned applications may resubmit only once, within one week
of receipt of their return.
